Bilateral hips

It is possible to have both hips replaced at the same time.

EB's story is best told by herself:

"I was diagnosed with leukemia in 2019 and underwent a lifesaving stem cell transplant.

Whilst in hospital I took up cycling on a bike in my hospital room. A complication of the transplant was a condition known as graft versus host disease and I was treated with very high dose steroids. These unfortunately caused avascular necrosis of both of my hips, where the bones crumbled due to a reduced blood supply.

I continued to cycle but the pain in my hips was getting worse. A year after my transplant I unfortunately relapsed with the leukemia and at the same time was told I needed a double hip replacement. I initially underwent decompression surgery to my hips whilst a new donor was being found. This meant I needed to go into a wheelchair for 3 months. I kept cycling on a floor bike to keep fit and took up wheelchair boxing.

The pain was excruciating by this stage and I had daily infusions of a drug to try to increase the blood flow to the hips. I was lucky a second donor was found and had another transplant.

Four months later I was offered a bilateral hip replacement by Mr Veysi. This had to be carefully planned because I had low immunity due to my leukemia. I stayed in hospital the night before my surgery for a blood transfusion. The surgery went to plan and I was able to walk the very next day. I focused on my exercises and very soon I was back to cycling and running. Now two years on, my hips are perfect and I am able to do everything and am forever grateful to Mr Veysi for giving me back my life. "
