Failed hip from Cyprus

Complex revision hip replacement requires custom made components.

CM is in his forties and has lived in Cyprus for a number of years where he worked as a photographer. He developed arthritis in both his hips and required bilateral hip replacements. He did very well with his left hip replacement, but developed complications with his right hip replacement.

During the surgery of his right hip there was a fracture of the thigh bone and of the pelvic bone which needed further surgery. He spent many weeks in hospital in Cyprus with no improvement in his condition.

He decided to return to his native Hull where he was referred to Chapel Allerton Hospital and Mr Veysi for management of his complex hip problem.

Assesment and investigations revealed that while his thigh bone was relatively easy to revise, the socket part of his hip in the pelvic bone was in a bad way such that routine implants would not be suitable to reconstruct the hip.

A custom made socket was manufactured by 3D printing. This was inserted into his hip during surgery achieving stability and allowing for routine mobilistaion.

CM is now pain-free and walking without aids. He is back in Cyprus where he continues to re-build his business.
