Failed twice and infected.

Infection is difficult to treat but careful planning and execution will lead to good results.

RM is in his 70ies. He is a diabetic. He continues to work in public service in Leeds.

He had a knee replacement which failed and was revised. His revision surgery was complicated by damage to his tendons which required repair at the time of the operation. Things became worse when his wound failed to heal and he deveolped infection in his revised knee.

He was referred to Mr Veysi for management of hif multiply operated knee which was infected. This is a complex problem requiring a multi-diciplinary approach.

After discussions with the Microbilogy team and other surgeons we carried out a tw-stage re-revision of RM's knee.

In the first operation his existing implants were removed, all infected tissue removed and a temporary knee replacement inserted with addition of antibiotics to the bone cement to achieve local antibiotic delivery. He also received additional antibiotics for 6 weeks. Once we were happy that the infection had been eradicated we operated on RM again, this time inserting a permanent knee replacement.

RM is now infetion free and continues to work. He walks with the aid of one walking stick.
